Downloadable datasets

We strive to improve researcher access to spatial datasets that can inform their conservation research.

 

Many spatial datasets can have issues that arise relating to invalid geometries, duplicate records and so forth. The versions we are providing have been cleaned by us (in PostGIS and elsewhere).

 

We hope that by giving easy access to these cleaned files, you can spend more time doing great science!

 

Please note: the datasets listed below carry usage restrictions or require access permission, but we've noted the simple process of how we'll handle that below. Contact us if you have any questions. 

UNEP/IUCN World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA). February 2017 Update. *February 2018 Update Available too*

Data description: Most comprehensive database of global marine and terrestrial protected area networks. Note: download of this data is only made available to those with University of Queensland login credentials (please contact us to receive access). Please visit the above source to download the most current monthly update of the data. If you need help with rendering valid geometries on the dataset please do not hesitate to contact us. Please let us know if you want the 2017 or 2018 update.

Projection: World Mollweide (ESRI 54009) (WGS84 also available for 2018 Update)

Processing Done: Original dataset re-projected to World Mollweide (equal area), geometries were made valid in a PostGIS database. Data is provided as a opensource Geopackage (.gpkg) file and will work in all open-source and proprietary GIS platforms (see http://www.geopackage.org/).

Birdlife International/IUCN Species Range Maps. January 2017 Update.

Data description: Global species distribution maps for 11,120 species. 

Projection: World Mollweide (ESRI 54009)

Processing Done: Original dataset re-projected to World Mollweide (equal area), geometries were cleaned in PostGIS database. Data is provided as a opensource Geopackage (.gpkg) file and will work in all open-source and proprietary GIS platforms (see http://www.geopackage.org/).
